Singapore...uhhhh...where's that?

We've been together in Singapore over a month now.  We must admit that this small island country is pretty cool. Last year, when I first heard we were moving to Singapore, the words out of my mouth were something like, "Singapore...uhhhhh...where's that?". So for those of you who are thinking the same thing, here are a few facts about our new home:

Where is Singapore

Singapore a small island country located at the southern tip of Malaysia (towards the bottom of the map below) and is the smallest nation in Southeast Asia.

Weather

Today is 88 degrees with humidity at 70%. Located 85 miles north of the equator, Singapore is hot and humid and rains often. Very cool thunder and lightning storms.

Language

There are four official languages spoken in Singapore: English, Chinese (Mandarin), Malay and Tamil. There is no problem getting around if you just know English.

Population

4.9 million people live in Singapore. Around 74% are Chinese, 13% Malays, 9% Indians, then other groups.

General Life

In many aspects, Singapore is very westernized and modern. Yesterday we were in the financial district, and with all of the tall skyscrapers and businessmen, we could have been in New York or San Francisco. Public transportation is easy, cheap and convenient. We take the MRT (subway/trolley) and busses everywhere. One difference here are the wet markets...I'll write about those later...very cool, but very different.

Signature Drink

The 'Singapore Sling'. Pink and sweet.

We live in the north of Singapore in an area called Sembawang. Where we live is different from the downtown hustle and bustle. When you take a walk it sounds like jungle (there are monkeys too!). Here are some pics. The trees here are amazing.
